What better way to end 2024

Over 18 months we worked with our partner GHD to deliver the Taranaki Street rising main upgrade for Wellington Water on behalf of Wellington City Council – ahead of schedule.

The Taranaki Street rising main is a key part of a wider programme of work to upgrade, renew and reconfigure the city's pump station and rising main network. It was witched on in December 2024 and is now delivering flows along Taranaki Street. Once connected into the new pump station in Inglewood Place it will be used to send wastewater to the main interceptor tunnel, which carries wastewater to the Moa Point treatment plant. It will be connected to the existing rising main network and help continue service if other mains need to be replaced in the future. If a problem arises in the local network, such as a burst pipe, this system will be able to pick up the load and pump it via an alternative route to the interceptor.

We're proud to have delivered this project ahead of schedule thanks to great teamwork and using the latest in trenchless technology - with the Guided Auger Bore (Gabby). Using laser guidance and front steer technology, Gabby's installation is very accurate – arriving within 0.02% of planned grade. And the fully cased system means that no drilling fluid is required.

Trenchless technologies like this also reduce the amount of contaminated waste taken to landfill, reduce the amount of reinstatement required and reduce disruption to traffic movements in the city. All up Gabby provided a great outcome for the people of Wellington and the environment.

Working on this project we have also enabled cost saving for the council on further development of Inglewood Place plaza by finishing the paving once council construction is completed – making sure it’s done – and paid for – just the once!

All up, a very successful project!
